Sensory Overload. A self-experiment on digital saturation and urban overstimulation.
Amid the hyper-digitalized, fast-paced environment of Seoul during COVID-19, I conducted a self-experiment to explore the effects of overstimulation—both from excessive media consumption and the sensory intensity of the city itself.
The anonymity of masks, social distancing, and constant digital interactions blurred human connection, amplifying a sense of detachment and mental fatigue. Through alternating phases of digital detox and media overconsumption, I observed how my brain adapted to the flood of stimuli—organizing chaos into order while simultaneously inducing stress, nervousness, and a creeping sense of paranoia. The overwhelming nature of the city, combined with pandemic-induced isolation, reinforced the importance of intentional disconnection to regain mental clarity.
This project highlights the psychological impact of overstimulation and the need for moments of stillness, nature, and real-world presence to counterbalance an increasingly hyper-connected world.
